Planning Paving Around a Pool: What to Confirm Before Ordering

A pool and its surrounding paving need to be planned together. The finished edge, access for construction and the work beneath the surface all affect your materials order. Before choosing a colour or counting pavers, agree the layout with the people doing the pool and paving work.

Start with the pool work

Is this a new pool, a renovation, or a change to the paving around an existing pool? Ask the pool contractor which parts of the surrounding area need to be opened and when those areas will be ready for paving. Ordering against an early sketch can leave you with the wrong quantities if the final footprint changes.

For a project in the Helderberg, Somerset West Pools publishes information on pool installation, repairs and renovations. Discuss the pool scope and site requirements directly, then coordinate the paving work before placing your materials order.

Agree the coping and finished levels

Coping is the finish at the pool edge; the wider paved surround is a separate part of the layout. Confirm who supplies and installs each part, how they meet, and where steps or changes in level are needed. Do not assume the same product will suit both uses.

Ask the installer to assess drainage, levels and the existing ground. Get those decisions into the written scope rather than choosing a slope or base depth from a general article.

Check the product for its intended use

A colour sample is a useful starting point, but it does not settle suitability for a pool surround. Tell the supplier where the paving will be used and ask about the product’s intended application, surface finish, cleaning and maintenance. Ask what information is available about performance when wet, and compare physical samples before making the final choice.

Explore the Pro Brick and Block paving range, then confirm the appropriate product for your project with the supplier and installer. Keep the pool-edge specification separate from the general paving order.

Measure the final layout

Measure the paved area from the agreed plan, excluding the pool itself and any planting beds. Show the installer the proposed pattern, borders, curves and steps so that cutting and waste can be allowed for. Ask for the order quantity in writing, including any separately counted edging or coping.

Plan delivery around the construction sequence

Pool equipment, excavation and paving deliveries may need the same access route. Agree when pavers should arrive, where they can be unloaded, and how the materials will be moved to the work area. Check access restrictions before booking a delivery.

A checklist before you order

  • The pool work and paved footprint are agreed.
  • Coping, paving, drainage and preparation have named responsibilities.
  • The supplier and installer have checked the intended product use.
  • The final measurements, pattern and cutting allowance are confirmed.
  • Delivery access, unloading and storage are arranged.
  • The quote states what is included and what is priced separately.
